Plastic injection moulding services — what does Nordmould offer?
What plastic injection moulding services does Nordmould provide?
Nordmould manages the full injection-moulding process from design review through to series production for product companies, OEMs, and hardware startups across the Baltic & Nordic region. The service covers three tiers — Rapid, Bridge, and Production — with tooling from €3,000, minimum orders from 100 pieces, and a free DFM review on every enquiry.
What is the process from first file to finished parts?
Step 1 — Free DFM (Design for Manufacturability) review
Send a STEP file or PDF. Nordmould's team reviews wall thickness, draft angles, undercuts, gate and ejector locations, and returns a written manufacturability note within one business day, at no charge. Issues caught here cost nothing to fix; the same issues caught after tooling begins cost days and money.
Step 2 — Written quote and tool design
Once DFM is approved, you receive a fixed tooling price, a per-unit production price for your target volume, and a confirmed lead-time schedule. Nordmould issues this in writing before any purchase order is raised.
Step 3 — Tooling manufacture
The mould tool is built by Nordmould's vetted EU partner network. Aluminium tools for Bridge work typically complete within the lower half of the 4–11 week window; hardened-steel production tools sit toward the upper end.
Step 4 — Trial shots and sign-off
Physical trial parts are produced from the new tool and sent to you for dimensional and cosmetic approval. Production does not begin until you confirm the parts meet specification.
Step 5 — Series production and delivery
Parts are moulded, inspected, and shipped to your address within the Baltic & Nordic region. Repeat orders run against the same qualified tool without repeating tooling costs.
What are the three service tiers?
| Tier | Tooling type | Typical volume | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid | 3D-printed / soft tool | 1–100 pieces | Design validation, investor samples, pre-production testing |
| Bridge | Aluminium tooling | 100–several thousand pieces | Market pilots, regulated approvals, SME production |
| Production | Hardened-steel tooling | Thousands to millions | Series manufacture, OEM supply, repeatable certified output |
Nordmould's three tiers are designed to take a product from first prototype to full production without changing supplier or account manager at each stage.
What materials does Nordmould work with?
| Material | Common applications | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ABS | Enclosures, housings, consumer products | Good impact resistance, easy to paint |
| PC | Lenses, safety covers, structural parts | High clarity, heat-resistant |
| PMMA | Display covers, lighting diffusers | Optical clarity, scratch-susceptible |
| PP | Living hinges, caps, packaging | Chemical resistance, low density |
| POM | Gears, bearings, precision parts | Low friction, dimensional stability |
| TPE | Grips, seals, soft-touch components | Flexible, overmoulded with rigid substrates |
| TPU | Wear parts, flexible housings, cables | Abrasion-resistant, elastic |
Engineering grades beyond this list are available on request. Material selection is reviewed as part of the free DFM process.
What surface finishes and secondary operations are available?
Standard finishes: matt, glossy, high-gloss. Colour is confirmed at DFM stage.
Secondary operations handled by Nordmould:
- Ultrasonic welding — joining moulded parts without adhesives or fasteners
- Insert moulding — metal or other inserts encapsulated during the shot
- Over-moulding — second material moulded over an existing substrate (e.g. soft-touch grip over rigid shell)
- EDM (electrical discharge machining) — for precise tool features
- Wire erosion — accurate cutting of tool steel
- Polishing — optical or cosmetic surface quality
- Micro-TIG welding — tool repair and fine detail work
- Surface grinding — flat and precise tool surfaces
All secondary operations are quoted as part of the main project; there is no need to source a separate sub-supplier.
What tolerances and capabilities should I expect?
Achievable tolerances depend on material, tool steel grade, and part geometry. Nordmould targets ±0.05 mm on critical dimensions for hardened-steel production tooling. Maximum part size and shot weight are confirmed at DFM stage based on your geometry.
Nordmould confirms all capability limits in writing as part of the free DFM review, so you know exactly what is achievable for your specific part before any tooling spend is approved.
Frequently asked questions
What injection moulding services does Nordmould provide? Nordmould provides three tiers: Rapid (soft-tool or 3D-printed prototypes), Bridge (aluminium tooling, low-to-mid volume), and Production (hardened-steel tooling, certified series). All tiers include a free DFM review and written quotes before any spend is committed.
What materials are available for injection moulding? Nordmould's standard materials are ABS, PC, PMMA, PP, POM, TPE, and TPU. Engineering grades are available on request. The right material for your application is discussed during the free DFM review.
What secondary operations can Nordmould handle? Secondary operations include ultrasonic welding, insert moulding, over-moulding, EDM, wire erosion, polishing, micro-TIG welding, and surface grinding. These are quoted alongside the main moulding work.
What surface finishes are available? Nordmould offers matt, glossy, and high-gloss finishes as standard. Texture and colour options are confirmed at DFM review stage.
What is the tooling lead time? Aluminium tooling typically completes faster within the 4–11 week window; hardened-steel production tooling sits at the longer end. Nordmould confirms a firm delivery schedule in writing at quote stage, before you commit.
Does Nordmould do insert moulding and over-moulding? Yes. Nordmould handles both insert moulding — where metal inserts are placed in the tool before the shot — and over-moulding, where a second material is moulded over an existing substrate. Both are standard secondary operations.
What file formats are needed to get a quote? A STEP file is preferred for a full DFM review. A PDF drawing is also accepted for an initial assessment. Nordmould returns a written manufacturability note and price within one business day of receiving your files.
What tolerances can Nordmould hold? Tolerances depend on material, tool steel, and part geometry. Nordmould works to ±0.05 mm on critical dimensions for production-grade steel tooling. Achievable tolerances for your specific part are confirmed in writing at the DFM review stage.
